Completion of the Flying with Eagles 111 Interviews of St. Johnians
As we celebrate St. John’s College’s 112th Anniversary tonight n(11.11.2024) at the Reunion Hightable, I am so excited to share a heartfelt project that has recently come to fruition:
“Flying with Eagles: The Interviews of 111 Alumni and St. Johnians.”
From the launching of the 1st Episode on 10 July 2022 to the final 111th Episode 12 Nov 2024, over the past two years and 4 months, we embarked on a journey to explore the lives of our fellow St. Johnians, visiting over 100 locations, including offices, organizations, and even the homes of our interviewees, to uncover their unique stories and experiences. The project was designed to celebrate the 111th Anniversary of St. John’s College and to prepare for our Grand Reunion Dinner – One & Only One in the HKCEC in November last year.
This journey has allowed us to traverse different eras and deeply appreciate the emotions and memories of each individual. From their formative days at St. John’s College to their current endeavors in work, family, social or retirement lives, these narratives have profoundly enriched my understanding of our community.
In the early stages, I often questioned whether I could complete such an ambitious and extensive undertaking. Many expressed doubts about our ability to finish the program. However, I was fortunate to have an incredible team by my side. Hilary Pang, Nixon Lee, Jenny Li, Ling Ling, Yankov Wong, Anna Hui, and other dedicated committee members became my steadfast partners. They eagerly committed their time—whether early in the weekday’s mornings or on weekends—to support me during each interview session.
Each interview typically spanned 30 to 40 minutes, which I then condensed into 7.5-minute highlights—a challenging yet rewarding task. With each interview, my editing skills evolved, making the later stages of this project flow much more smoothly.
We hope that these 111 Interviews with our St. Johnians, seniors, and juniors will serve as a cherished collection of memories, documenting over half a century of our shared history. I aspire for future viewers of these interviews to feel the essence of student life from that era and draw inspiration from it, embodying the spirit of St. John’s—the spirit of Aquila in Flying with Eagles.
